Four Design Principles
When presenting these ideas, in order to actually implement any kind of change, many of these design principles will have to be considered. Cleaning up Morgantown would be a many faceted project. Four of these principles would be:
Desire Line: Determine the well used areas by locating the dirtiest sidewalks and the places that the vagrants congregate the most.
Entry Point: Determining where people actually enter Downtown Morgantown. Focus on cleaning up these areas and the desire line areas, which are the well used areas.
Constraint: Consider ways to constrain the use of areas to the way that is most desirable for the general public.
Cost Benefit: Benefit to the City will have to be displayed for all projects that require funding.
There certainly will be no implementation of any ideas or plans without Design by Committee at the City Council level, and by consensus of public opinion.
Four new principles derived from from class discussion
Entry Point: While I already used Entry Point, other students made me realize that it is also important to use this concept in the delivery of the message I am conveying, and does not just apply to the focus on how to solve the physical problems of the situation my narrative deals with.
Exposure Effect: I intend to immediately show pictures of the uncleanliness of the sidewalks and the vagrants on the sidewalks to expose the viewer to the extent of the problem. Perhaps this could be worked into the idea of posters or radio announcements or newspaper ads that would expose people to the issues.
80/20 Rule: Perhaps only 20% of the sidewalks would have to be pressure cleaned on a regular basis to give the other 80% the impression of being clean. This other 80% could possibly be cleaned on a less regular basis. This argument would feed into the Cost Benefit discussions.
Five Hat Racks: This principle deals with organization. This will be an important factor in displaying the information. Location will be an especially "hat" in this presentation.
