Final Design Principle Reading Discussion The last readings provided slim pickings for my use in creating the digital curation project. But two are most usable, Visibility and von Restorff Effect . Visiblity is important in this context for access of the digital items. It will be clear and visible that one is to scroll down and that there are links or buttons to click on or that the way to view a video is to click on the arrow. Also, recommended devices like the cigarette disposal receptacle will have to be visible and recognizable for immediate recognition of purpose. The receptacle design I have now is not exactly recognizable. The von Restorff Effect is useful in that more interesting ways of displaying items towards the middle of the scroll will help to make them more memorable. This can be achieved by the unusual methods of advertising in the campaign posters and signs. Some are quite eye-catching.

Design Principle Reading Discussion pgs. 192-233 Three design principles from this reading that I will find useful for displaying my media are Readability , Rule of Thirds , and Serial Position Effect. Readability will be important for the text I am writing. There will be no large words or difficult concepts. A simple text accompanied by the pictures and videos should get the message across effortlessly to the audience. They should not have to "work" to get the message. Rule of Thirds is important in the framing of the photos I am taking and the video(s) that I am making. One interview I took yesterday was notable to me for it's rule of thirds placement of the speaker and the other items in the scene. Rule of thirds may also prove to be useful in the arrangement of groups of pictures on the finished presentation. Serial Position Effect will mean that the first things I present will make a lasting impression on the viewer and the message developed early will b...
Response to Reading, pgs 148-191 "What five or six of the design principles you have read about thus far (drawing on those from any of your reading up to page 191) will be most applicable and useful for your digital curation project?" The most useful for the DCP that were in this current reading block are Progressive Disclosure, Priming, Picture Superiority Effect, Operant Conditioning and Nudge. Progressive Disclosure withing the presentation of the project itself will be important since people need to see the problem first so that when they are presented with solutions they will be eager to adopt the suggested solutions or to find better solutions, but they will be compelled to act. The disclosure of the problem will take place using many pictures, using the Picture Superiority Effect , which will speak far more to the problem than text on its own. All the suggested solutions will have to incorporate Priming , Operant Conditioning and Nudging in order to first educ...
